Have you ever met someone you instantly connected with? For some reason the two of you just click and you wonder to yourself “where have you been all my life”?
Like peanut butter and jelly, your equally important contributions complement each other flawlessly as the conversation meanders, brushing by both casual and serious topics, but there is nothing except complete openness.
There are no interruptions, no talking over the other person, only active listening and thoughtful responses. For the first time, I felt as though someone wanted to hear what I had to say. They didn’t zone out, they didn’t listen to someone who said the same thing but louder, they didn’t blatantly ignore me and change the course of the conversation.
And like the object in those hypothetical physics situations when you’re able to ignore friction and air resistance, the conversation continues so effortlessly. It glides on and on and eventually you realize that hours have passed and you’ve walked 8 miles around Midtown.
How lucky am I to have experienced something some people wait a lifetime for? Real is rare.
